Episode-by-Episode Summary
Episode 1: Winter Is Coming
The story begins north of the Wall where Night’s Watch rangers encounter terrifying White Walkers. In Winterfell, Ned Stark receives news that his mentor Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died mysteriously. King Robert Baratheon travels north to offer Ned the position. Meanwhile, across the sea, exiled Targaryen siblings Viserys and Daenerys plan their return to power. Viserys sells Daenerys in marriage to Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in exchange for an army. Young Bran Stark discovers Jaime and Cersei Lannister in a compromising situation, leading Jaime to push him from a tower window.
Episode 2: The Kingsroad
Bran survives but falls into a coma. An assassin attempts to kill him, but his direwolf saves him. Catelyn Stark suspects the Lannisters and travels south to warn Ned. Jon Snow decides to join the Night’s Watch despite knowing he’ll never inherit anything as a bastard. On the journey south, Joffrey picks a fight with a butcher’s boy, and Arya’s direwolf Nymeria bites him. To appease the Lannisters, Robert orders Sansa’s direwolf Lady executed instead.
Episode 3: Lord Snow
Ned arrives in King’s Landing and joins the Small Council, discovering the crown is six million gold dragons in debt, mostly to the Lannisters. He begins investigating Jon Arryn’s death. Catelyn secretly meets Ned and reveals her suspicions about the Lannisters. At the Wall, Jon struggles to adapt but eventually becomes a leader among the new recruits. Daenerys discovers she’s pregnant and begins asserting herself, learning Dothraki ways.
Episode 4: Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things
Bran awakens but cannot walk. Tyrion visits Winterfell and provides designs for a special saddle so Bran can ride. Ned continues his investigation and learns Jon Arryn was researching Robert’s bastard children. At the Wall, Sam Tarly arrives and Jon protects him from bullies. Daenerys stands up to Viserys for the first time. Catelyn encounters Tyrion at an inn and arrests him, accusing him of attempting to murder Bran.
Episode 5: The Wolf and the Lion
Catelyn takes Tyrion to the Eyrie to face her sister Lysa Arryn’s judgment. The mountain road proves treacherous with attacks from hill tribes. In King’s Landing, Robert learns of Daenerys’s pregnancy and orders her assassination, causing Ned to resign as Hand in protest. Ned discovers that all of Robert’s bastards have black hair while Joffrey is blonde. Jaime confronts Ned about Tyrion’s arrest, killing Ned’s men and wounding Ned in the fight.
Episode 6: A Golden Crown
Tyrion demands a trial by combat at the Eyrie. The sellsword Bronn volunteers as his champion and wins, securing Tyrion’s freedom. Robert reinstates Ned as Hand before leaving on a hunting trip. Ned sends men to arrest Gregor Clegane for his raids. Viserys threatens Daenerys and her unborn child, leading Drogo to execute him by pouring molten gold on his head. Daenerys realizes fire doesn’t frighten her and that she is the true dragon.
Episode 7: You Win or You Die
Ned confronts Cersei with the truth that her children are actually Jaime’s, not Robert’s, and gives her a chance to flee. Robert returns mortally wounded from a boar attack. On his deathbed, he names Ned as Lord Regent. Ned refuses Renly’s offer to seize power immediately. After Robert dies, Ned attempts to expose Joffrey’s illegitimacy and install Stannis as rightful king, but Littlefinger betrays him. The Lannister guards slaughter Ned’s men.
Episode 8: The Pointy End
Ned is imprisoned while Lannisters purge Stark supporters throughout King’s Landing. Syrio Forel sacrifices himself so Arya can escape. Sansa is forced to write letters calling her father a traitor. Robb Stark calls his banners and marches south with an army. At the Wall, dead Night’s Watch brothers reanimate as wights and attack, revealing the supernatural threat is real. Drogo’s wound becomes infected after Daenerys saves a witch named Mirri Maz Duur from being raped.
Episode 9: Baelor
Robb wins a crucial battle at the Whispering Wood by sacrificing 2,000 men as a diversion, capturing Jaime Lannister. Tyrion survives the battle on the other front after being knocked unconscious early. Drogo’s condition worsens, and Daenerys desperately turns to Mirri Maz Duur’s blood magic to save him. Ned is brought before the Sept of Baelor where he falsely confesses to treason to save his daughters. Despite promises of mercy, Joffrey orders his execution. Ned Stark is beheaded while his daughters watch helplessly.
Episode 10: Fire and Blood
The Seven Kingdoms descend into war. Robb is declared King in the North by his bannermen. Joffrey forces Sansa to look at her father’s severed head. Arya escapes King’s Landing disguised as a boy. Catelyn and Robb grieve while vowing revenge. The blood magic saves Drogo’s life but leaves him in a vegetative state, and Daenerys’s child is stillborn and deformed. Daenerys smothers Drogo and builds a funeral pyre. She places her three dragon eggs on it, ties Mirri Maz Duur to it, and walks into the flames herself. The next morning, she emerges unburnt with three baby dragons, the first seen in over a century.
